Introduce yourself!

I'm Barbara Ryan and I'm 19. At the moment I'm living with my friends in South West London. I love going to the seaside, dancing, making my own dim sum, and cycling along the harbor with my dad in Rye.

Where do you go to school?

I've just started studying graphic design at Kingston University, which is the most fun ever, so far!

Tell us about your fanzine, BFR Mag.

The first issue was made when I was 15 and just playing around with putting all my thoughts in one place. I remember reproducing 10 copies and bringing them into school, choosing really carefully who to give them to and leaving them in 7" records in shops. Then I just wanted to make more and more issues - I must have had a lot to say. BFR comes out when it's ready; it's nice not having pressure for deadlines. It lets you refine your ideas. But when my friends start nagging, I do try and knock an issue out faster!

How do you choose the topics for each issue?

Whatever is on my mind! I think my zine is quite self-indulgent to be honest, embarrassingly. Most of the spreads are just pages from my sketchbooks. But I love collaborating with my friends. There's nothing more exciting than putting really rad work by my mates in the zine and sharing it with more people.

Describe the process behind hand making a zine.

1. Deciding content

What is your next issue about?

The next issue is number 19. It's the first time the issue has been the same as my age, which I think is exciting. It's going to be brush and ink, and will be small enough to fit in your back pocket.

What are your top five favorite zines?

Do you collect anything?

Pressed pennies. It's quite rare that you see machines for them these days, so you gotta get a penny done if you see one. I just love how it adds value to such a small coin.

Tell us about your "self-portrait," the doll you made of yourself.

That was for my university summer holiday project. I always hate how I look in photographs so I thought it would be rad to create a model that I could use to pose for me in photographs. Visitors get a bit freaked out when they see it in my room, though.

Can you give some advice to someone who is interested in starting his or her own zine?

Do it! And make friends with someone who owns a photocopier, it will make life so much easier for you.

What's the best part about living in London?

Galleries! Most galleries grant free access, which is great because I think you need to keep revisiting art to understand it more and more. For most of my life I lived near Buckingham Palace, which was so cool because I could pretty much walk wherever I wanted to go. When you visit other places you realize you need a car or a train to get to what you want to see. It's cool to have such independence from a young age.

Where are your five favorite places to go in London?

1. YoYo at Notting Hill Arts Club for dancing.
2. Dalston Rooftop Garden for cozy film screenings in the summer.
3. The Victoria and Albert Museum for art and design. I think it's the best museum in the world.
4. The ICA Bookshop for zines and magazines, and the bar there for drinks.
5. New Loon Moon Supermarket for groceries.

Tell us an early childhood memory about drawing.

I used to leave love notes for my parents and my sister almost everyday. There are literally hundreds of them, all covered in felt tip pens, hearts, and stickers.

How would you describe your personal style?

Comfortable. I do so many errands, so practicality is important.

What are the five most unique pieces of clothing you own?

1. Gym shorts I've had since I was in junior school and still wear.
2. White wide leg trousers that are covered in pearls that I got for £5 in Nottingham.
3. Gorgeous hiking shoes I got from a second hand shop by the seaside with string laces for £2.
4. Tees and jumpers from when I was little with my Dad's drawings on them.
5. My Campbell's Tomato Soup fancy dress outfit I made when I was 15.

What's a night out with you on the weekend like?

Most Sundays I like to go to car boot sales, which involves quite an early start. So most Saturday nights are usually spent in, cooking big meals, playing records, or watching the television in anticipation of the bargain hunting the next morning!

What's your dream job?

Working in my studio on art direction on big and small projects, meeting new people, learning loads, and collaborating with my friends!

What's your life motto?

Never complain, never explain. Not sure if I follow it too well though!

Grayson Perry: The Tomb of the Unknown Crafts

Grayson Perry is definetly one of my favourite Essex boys. After seeing his show today, I want to visit it again and again, learn more about him and also make so much more stuff. Mind blowing stuff, I highly, highly recommend it. The show is an installation of objects made by him, alongside objects made by unknown men and women throughout history from the British Museum’s collection - with a brilliant narrative. Perry said that "Everything in the British Museum was contemporary once" and I had never really thought about the objects displayed like that before. And to me Perry's work is so contempory featuring beautiful vases showing obese teenagers, cyber bullying and the Lotto rollover - brilliant!

Alan Measles features very heavily in the show. Do you not know who Mr Measles is? Well he is the 50 year old dictator of Grayson Perry's imagination - his beloved teddy bear -"When I was a toddler Alan was the name of my best human friend and I had measles". Obviously the real Mr Measles didn't appear in the show, as he is far too precious to be in a display but his presence is there none the less!

When I was really little I hated going to museum and galleries because "ewww old things are boring and too smelly". But this show really has drilled into me that all these things displayed in glass cabinets in dark museums where once the cutting edge and spectacularly new and exciting to the viewer. The excitement I feel when I look at Perry's work. I feel that it is so appropriate that this show is in the British Museum because so often it is easy to just walk to the Mummy's or the Rosetta Stone but everything displayed was once modern and not primitive and boring as I used to think when I was small.

The show runs till February and I will certainly revisit it. Also listen to the Grayson Perry, Desert Island Disks it's very good!

Wowwowwow there are so many wicked new books out at the moment. Firstly "how to make jewellery" by Tatty Devine. This book is so beautiful, easy to follow and is full of great ideas (most of which I wanna try out in the holidays - espc the photocopy watch bracelet) and the art direction is so bang on!
Also "a sky full of kindness" came out recently which is totally superb. So worth a read, even if you aren't a child.

I thought it would be cool to start blogging on the go, as I spend a lot of time travelling places these days. And I get too many thoughts to keep track of and when I sit down I forget it all.
Above are two zines I have made. When I screen print them - I make all the artwork on one a1 sheet and then cut it in half to create two single sheet booklets and slip them inside eachother to create a mag. Its a really cost effective way of making things. As the big sheets cost 14p each from Atlantis.
Also I think they make cool posters. If you know me and want one for your room - ask me when you see me and I'll hook you up.

Was kindly given the coolest gift from McCully&Crane. I really love i-D so much and I remember lugging it in my schoolbag all the way to Hammersmith to show to ma matez to read at lunch- lame! Recently I feel that it has got a bit too fashion-y, I like the text parts best. So when I was given issue 12 of the mag I was chuffed to see it jammed with street style, a drug education double spread, schoolwear to weekendwear and places to eat. It's really weird reading about all these really crazy cool boutiques and stores on the Kings Road, because I don't really feel it's like that anymore at all, which is quite sad.

The 19-year-old zine veteran Barbara Frankie Ryan is in the midst of putting the finishing touches to GIRLS + ZINES, her first solo exhibition opening at Tatty Devine this week. Handmade in her bedroom to hand out to kids at school before she even knew what a “zine” was, Barbara’s BFR Mag is a little matrix of wittily captioned illustrations that vacillate between sharply honest vulnerability and hard-edged cheeky humour, punctuated by playful discussions of fashion. And it is this highly entertaining style that has Tatty Devine proclaiming BFR Mag to be one of their favourite zines.

For 'GIRLS + ZINES', Barbara put together a special zine that centres on girls who make them, including an exploration of the history of zines along with useful and funny advice on how to make one. She has also amassed over sixty multifarious zines made by girls, ranging from ones about sci-fi and volcanoes to one on guilty pleasure television and a Spanish-language zine about music, which will all be on display for browsing and available from the zine-exchange booth. Dazed Digital sat down with Barbara amongst her collection of zines to consider the relevance and intimacy of the medium, the importance of celebrating female talent and photocopying bums on school photocopiers.

Dazed Digital: What is it about this medium for you?

Barbara: I love most things that are DIY and intimate. The ace thing about making zines is that, in my opinion, they don’t require high levels of training to produce, anyone can have a go at making one and that’s what really excites me. All you need is the golden triad: paper, pen, photocopier… then you’re good to go! And I just love the quality of photocopiers, I find it so charming.

DD: Why "girls" and zines?
Barbara: Oddly most of the people I have met through zines have turned out to be girls, so it made sense to centre this project on celebrating “Girls+Zines”. Although there are so many great zines made by guys, especially those by Lovenskate. It's a celebration of girls making stuff and just getting on with what they do! But the most important thing, I think, is celebrating that zines are still being made today and relevant despite the growth of the internet. And I think they are relevant because the internet is so permanent and accessible, but zines are like a secret club; you can put them in the bin and next to no one will know it ever existed!

DD: Have you found any common themes in girls’ zines?
Barbara: Most of them were reassuringly honest and funny to read. A lot of them draw on personal experiences, similar to diaries which is great for nosy people like me to flick through. And a large number were illustrators and artists showcasing their latest work. My favourite is "Bumzine". It's published anonymously by this girl who photocopies her bottom on the college photocopier. "Volcano Club" is ace too – it's a really nerdy zine about everything volcano related.

DD: Where do your best ideas come from?

Barbara: Drawing every day, trying to get ideas out. I like drawing from life and I think if you’re good at drawing from life you can be better at drawing from your mind. And boys! It’s always boys I draw about! Yeah, really stupid things like: “I miss finding you in my bed.” Stuff like that. Just things that are true.

It's Sunday night and I'm in the mood for writing on the blog. So it's happening!

So, if you didn't know I'm doing this show at Tatty Devine all about zines, it launches next week so I'm trying to work really hard on that. As well as collecting cool zines by other people I have made one myself. It's gonna be in loadsa colours, real exciting. Here is a photo below ...

Was in Nottingham this weekend. Went to the countryside there and cycled in the woods. Was pretty chill. Then I saw the most amazing shop ever on Maid Marion Avenue (I think?) but was soo annoying as it was shut. But for ages I've been buying clothes from the John Lewis uniform department, it's perfect for basics and sporty things. This shop was on a different level though! Bargain central!

£1 for a super cute summer dress. You could get the sewing machine out and turn it into a cute jumpsuit.

Went to the Tracey Emin show the other day.

And I was pleasantly surprised.

Before I was always a bit impartial to her work and didn't really have an opinion on it.

My friends and I used to go this club in Knightsbridge which was littered with work by the Young British Artists, like wallpapers, loadsa skulls and this masssive damien hirst skull glitter ball on the dancefloor and lots of Emin light pieces and I wasn't really impressed by it to be honest - just thought "expensive art, so what?".

But her exhibition at Hayward kinda changed my opinion. Like you have to give her some credit for how honest and ball-sy she is. And her quilts are kinda brilliant too and her collab with Longchamp a while back was really neat.

But the one thing that was great about the show. Was finding out about her pop up shops and pop up galleries. That's the kind of thing that exites me, exhibiting and living in a space for people to see. And making stuff for people to actually buy.

Made me think of Keith Haring's "Pop Shop" on Lafayette, when we were younger our mum had the coolest ever little back pack from there. There's a real good essay on his shop in the new (pink) issue of it's nice that - will explain more eloquently than me!

Afternoon

So many zine submissions for the show Girls+Zines, which begins on August 3rd for the whole month at Tatty Devine Brick Lane. It's not too late for submissions you can drop them off at the Brick Lane shop just tell the shop girls it's for the show.

PLUS if you're away for August all the zines are going to be donated to the British Women's Library afterwards, in Shoreditch, to be archived so you can visit that. And if London is a bit out of reach I'm thinking of setting up some kind of online library/archive/thing ...

Yeah, we did a party!

This month it was Ryantown's third birthday, woo! Ryantown is one of my fave places, I don't go there loads but when I do it makes me really happy. Especially Cynthia who runs the shop, who is so lovely. I'm sure that if you've been there she would have left an impression on you! We celebrated at the Strand Continental and it was soo cool, Blondie was playing next door at Somerset House so whenever I went to the loo I had a little listen to her gig.

Obviously every birthday party needs a cake! DUH! I made this cake that looked seriously shoddy until I dusted it with icing sugar, a sift and a lasercut - top cake decorating tip!

And even more obviously, a party needs party bags! Filled with loadsa ryantown goodies and mix tapes and cool shit. Sadly I didn't get one, but you know gotta act like a grown up these days - no hissy fits.

Ok ... so even though it's a bit late, I thought I would share with you my final project.

I chose the topic of "lost+found" because at my house everyone gets really stressy when things are lost I HATE IT!

My final piece ended up being a book.

I wanted to communicate the feeling of not wanting to be seen as being irresponsible when you lose something that isn't yours. And that moment of madness when you think you've got away with replacing the lost article ... we've all been there, right? RIGHT!?!

SHOES!

Over the last year I have been pretty gross alternating between like three pairs of shoes, yuck!

But over the last two weeks I have been on quite the shoe shopping spree!

Thought I would share my finds ...

Ok, this pair are from a charity shop in Rye. They were £2 in a big box of shoes ... luckily they were too small for Amelia so I picked them up. A weird hybrid between DMs and Timberland boots (but made by Clarks!) I like the rope laces best - Bargain!!

This pair are from the same charity shop in Rye and were slightly pricier at £4. They're brand new and are a kinda desert boot low top ... nice change for summer. But would have to be super careful of people spilling drinks on them as they look like they would ruin easily.

Went into Topshop without the intention of buying anything but oddly left with these parmaviolet loafers. They're not to my usual taste but I kinda like 'em for potterin dahn the kings rd and shiz like that haha There was an orange pair too which were pretty toff-tastic haha

Last pair! These I got from a market for twelve euro, they're kind of mental. But my mum likes them a lot so they must be alright! I don't really wear heels to be honest but am keen to take these bad boys out for an outing!

Andy Rementer's work is the kind of work that makes me actually laugh out loud when I see it.

Which is such a good thing!

Was only introduced to his work this year but I think his illustrations are fantastic.

And I had a flip through some of his photocopied zines which are really fun.

I first saw his work at Pick Me Up in March and remember being stoked that my parents chose one that I really like ... that coinicidently matches the colours of the walls perfectly! Which actually is a painting, how cool right??

Ok, so last Sunday I went to a pretttty cool place.

It's called "Mauerpark" and its this HUMONGUS carboot sale, like 1km long (but without the cars and their boots) in Berlin, the underground stop was Bernauer Strasse.

It was flippin' ace, I was in secondhand heaven.

Could have happily spent all day there but didn't want to bore my friends.

AND if that wasn't enough the place has a MASSIVE kareoke arena, actually more a stadium than an arena. It was totally unreal like a kareoke/carboot olympics haha.

Anyway, you should soo check out if your there sooo many good bargains.

The really cool thing about the GIRLS+ZINES project I'm working on at the moment is that I get to snoop at loads of really rad zines. Over the next couple of months there will probably be a lot of posts like this and this shall be the first one!

"Bumzine stemmed from a desire i had last year to sit on the photocopier when I was photocopying things at the college where I studied. Well, I started scanning my bum, and my friends thought it would be funny to distribute the photos in a zine" says the anonymous creator of this gem.

This post is just a mashup of lately.

Went to the V+A illustration awards on Monday with the family. The work that stood out to me the most was by Hannah Simpson (a 2nd year Kingston illustration student). Here etchings of plague, cholera and anthrax bacteria are just gorgeous (see above) also Amelia G told me that she did some illustrations for her Compendium of Fashion Illustration which I bet are hella good too.

Also Rose Blake has started a sick new project (maybe not that new ...). The website allows you to hear what different artists/designers/photographers listen to in their studios (two new artists are uploaded each week). While you're listening you can read why they like the tracks, bit like desert island disks really.

Went to this sale, this afternoon. Not meant to be spending lots of money at the moment but I made an exception for this. Would say that I managed to sort out my summer wardrobe with a ten quid bag .. worth going to, if you don't mind elbowing slow people out of the way!

I love the work of the artist Wim Delvoye.

Was first introduced to him in contextual studies. My favourite pieces are his cooked meat, marble floors ... genius! The ripples of fat are just perfection ...

would like to see him incorporate some of this crap into his work ....
